Today was easily one of the most exhausting yet exhilarating days of my entire fall break. My older sister, Maya, is applying to colleges this year, so my parents dragged me along on a road trip to visit the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I originally thought I would just be holding my parents' coats and staring at boring brick buildings all afternoon, but the moment we stepped onto campus, my whole perspective shifted. Calling this place "massive" feels like an understatement; it is practically a vibrant city within a city.
We started our morning at the center of Central Campus, a bustling open space everyone calls "The Diag." Students were everywhere—some hurrying to classes with coffee cups in hand, others lounging on the grass reading, and a few playing frisbee despite the crisp autumn chill in the air. Right in the middle of the main walkways is a huge bronze letter "M" embedded in the pavement. Maya was about to step directly on it when a tour guide rushed over to stop her, explaining that local campus legend says stepping on the "M" before taking your first college exam will bring terrible luck! Maya jumped back so fast I couldn't stop laughing.
