Exploring the Berkshire Mountains: Habitats and Seasons

Nested in western Massachusetts, the Berkshire Mountains are a scenic highland region filled with dense forests, rolling hills, and clear winding rivers. This area is home to many different natural habitats, which are the environments where plants and animals find the food, water, and shelter they need. Throughout the year, the Berkshires undergo dramatic seasonal changes that shape how wildlife survives and thrives.

A major habitat in the Berkshires is the broadleaf forest. These woods are filled with trees like sugar maples, American beeches, and yellow birches. Beneath these tall trees, the forest floor is covered in ferns, mosses, and rich soil. In spring and summer, the thick leaves form a high canopy that blocks bright sunlight, keeping the forest floor cool and damp. Streams and wetlands flow through the mountain valleys, creating ideal habitats for red-spotted newts, wood frogs, and beavers. Larger mammals, including black bears, bobcats, and white-tailed deer, roam through these woods searching for plants, berries, and insects.
