Nested in the mountains of Garrett County, Maryland, Swallow Falls State Park is one of the state's most breathtaking natural treasures. Known for its rushing rivers, ancient trees, and dramatic rock formations, this park draws thousands of visitors each year who come to explore its scenic outdoors.
The main feature of the park is Muddy Creek Falls, a spectacular 39-foot waterfall. As the highest free-falling waterfall in Maryland, Muddy Creek Falls crashes down over large rock ledges into a deep pool below. Visitors can view the waterfall from several safe observation platforms along the trail. During the spring, when melting snow feeds the creek, the waterfall roars with immense force. In the early 1900s, famous inventors Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone even camped near these falls to enjoy their natural serenity.
In addition to Muddy Creek Falls, the park features a famous 1.2-mile canyon trail that loops around the Youghiogheny River. Walking along this trail takes hikers past three other beautiful waterfalls: Swallow Falls, Upper Falls, and Lower Falls. The path winds through a rare, old-growth forest of tall eastern hemlock and white pine trees. Some of these giant trees are over 300 years old, creating a dense green canopy that shields the forest floor from sunlight.
Exploring Swallow Falls State Park offers visitors a look into Maryland's rich wilderness history. Whether hiking past roaring white water, marveling at towering trees, or photographing the cascading falls, travelers can experience the timeless beauty of the Appalachian region.
