From Fishing Village to Megacity: The Story of Tokyo

Today, Tokyo is one of the largest and most exciting cities in the world. Neon signs illuminate the night sky, high-speed bullet trains zoom between stations, and millions of people hurry through bustling crosswalks every day. Yet, if you traveled back in time five hundred years, you would not find towering skyscrapers or crowded subways. Instead, you would find a quiet, swampy fishing village known as Edo.
Edo's journey toward greatness began around the year 1603. A powerful military leader named Tokugawa Ieyasu united Japan and established his government in Edo. While the Emperor still lived in the traditional capital of Kyoto, Edo became the true center of political power. Builders quickly got to work draining marshes, digging canals, and constructing a massive castle with stone walls and deep moats. Samurai warriors, craftspeople, and merchants moved to the area in droves. By the early 1700s, more than one million people lived in Edo, making it one of the most populated cities on Earth.
