From Prairie to Farmland: Iowa's Agricultural Journey
Centuries ago, the state of Iowa was covered by a massive ocean of tallgrass prairie. This dynamic ecosystem covered nearly 80 percent of the land. Natural fires swept through the region, while large herds of bison and elk grazed on the thick grasses. Plants like big bluestem grass and wild coneflowers grew deep roots, reaching up to fifteen feet under the ground. Over thousands of years, these deep roots broke down and created a thick, rich layer of topsoil. Early European travelers saw a vast green landscape filled with diverse plant and animal life.
In the mid-1800s, European-American settlers began to arrive in Iowa. At first, farming was very difficult. The heavy prairie sod broke old wooden and iron plows. Everything changed in 1837 when John Deere invented the steel plow. This smooth steel blade cut through the tough roots without getting stuck in the sticky dirt. Soon after, new railroads spread across Iowa during the 1850s and 1860s. The railroads allowed farmers to send their harvested crops to large cities across the country.
