From Ship to Shop

How does a toy or a shirt get to your local store? Many goods travel a long way from across the ocean. Let us follow one cardboard box packed with wooden puzzle blocks to see how it moves.
First, the box is placed inside a giant metal container on a cargo ship. The ship crew works hard to keep the heavy containers tied down tight. This keeps them safe when big ocean waves rock the ship back and forth for many days.
Next, the ship arrives at a busy port. Tall cranes lift the metal containers high in the air and set them onto the dock. Dockworkers check the numbers on each container. They open the doors and carefully unload our box of puzzles.
Then, a truck driver loads the box into a truck. The driver carries it to a huge warehouse. Inside, workers sort boxes and place them on tall shelves until stores are ready to order them.
Finally, another delivery driver brings the box right to a neighborhood shop. A clerk opens the box, takes out the wooden puzzle, and sets it on a shelf for customers to see.
Not every product takes this exact ocean journey, but many do. It takes the teamwork of sailors, dockworkers, and drivers to bring goods from far away right to your hands.
