Gold in the Hills
Ben and Mae stood by the cold creek. The tall green hills of Georgia were very quiet.
It was the year 1829. Many people came to these hills to look for gold.
Mae held a big tin pan in her hands. She scooped up some wet dirt and rocks.
Ben helped her swirl the water in the pan. They wanted to find a shiny treasure.
The mud washed away into the bright stream. Only small gray stones were left at the bottom.
Then, Mae saw a tiny yellow spark. It was a real piece of gold!
"Look!" Mae whispered with a big smile. Ben cheered and hugged his sister.
They put the gold in a safe little pocket. It was a very happy day in the hills.
