Guiding the Lake Superior Mariners: The Story of Split Rock Lighthouse
High above the cold, stormy waters of Lake Superior stands Split Rock Lighthouse. Perched dramatically on a 130-foot cliff along Minnesota’s North Shore, this iconic landmark spent decades guarding one of the busiest freshwater shipping routes in North America. Its bright beam once guided massive iron ore freighters safely through fierce inland storms, making it one of the most famous lighthouses in the United States.
The story of Split Rock Lighthouse began after a disastrous storm swept across Lake Superior in November 1905. Known as the Mataafa Storm, the brutal gale battered the lake with blinding snow and towering waves, damaging or sinking nearly thirty ships. Ship captains and steel companies urged the federal government to build a lighthouse on the dangerous, rocky coastline. Congress agreed, and construction began in 1909.
Building the lighthouse was an extraordinary engineering challenge. There were no roads leading to the isolated cliff, so all building supplies had to arrive by boat. Workers used a steam-powered crane called a derrick to hoist heavy sacks of cement, bricks, and steel up the sheer rock face. By 1910, the dark red brick tower, fog signal building, and homes for the keepers were finished. On July 31, 1910, the lighthouse shone its light across Lake Superior for the very first time.
