How to Explore Monte Albán: A Student's Guide

Welcome to Monte Albán, the spectacular ancient capital of the Zapotec civilization! Perched high on a flattened mountain top in Oaxaca, Mexico, this archaeological site is over 2,500 years old. Exploring these ruins is an amazing adventure, but because the site is so high and open, you need to prepare carefully. Follow this step-by-step visitor's guide to ensure your hike is both safe and unforgettable.
Step 1: Pack the Perfect Explorer's Kit
Before you even leave your hotel or bus, make sure you have the right gear. The sun at Monte Albán can be very intense because there is very little shade.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply sunscreen before you start.
- Put on sturdy, closed-toe shoes. You will be walking on uneven gravel, steep stone steps, and grassy paths. Sandals are not recommended.
- Bring a refillable water bottle. Staying hydrated is the most important rule of hiking in the mountains.
- Pack a light jacket. Since the ruins are high up, it can be surprisingly windy and cool in the morning, even if it gets hot later.
Step 2: Respect the Ancient Stones
Monte Albán is a protected historical treasure. To keep it safe for future generations, you must practice good stewardship.
- stelae:
- Carved stone slabs or pillars created by ancient civilizations to show figures or tell stories.
- stewardship:
- The careful and responsible management of something, such as protecting historical ruins.
- hydrated:
- Having absorbed enough water or fluids to keep your body working healthy and well.
- archaeological:
- Related to the study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of physical remains.
- fragile:
- Easily broken, damaged, or harmed.
- observatory:
- A special building or structure used for observing and studying the stars, planets, and sky.
