How to Make Paper Marigolds

DĂa de Muertos is a special time when many families remember loved ones.
Bright golden flowers called marigolds, or cempasĂșchil, are often placed on home displays.
You can make your own paper version of this bright flower using simple craft supplies.
Materials
- 5 or 6 squares of pre-cut orange or yellow tissue paper
- 1 short piece of yarn
Steps
-
Stack your tissue paper squares neatly on top of each other. Line up the edges so the corners match.
-
Fold the bottom edge up about one inch. Flip the paper over and fold it again, just like making a paper fan. Keep folding back and forth until the whole stack is one narrow strip.
-
Tie the piece of yarn around the exact middle of your folded strip. Ask an adult for help if you need a tight knot.
-
Fan out the folds on both sides of the knot. The paper will now look like a little bow tie.
-
Gently lift the top layer of tissue paper up toward the center. Pull softly so the thin paper does not tear.
-
Lift each remaining layer of tissue paper, one at a time, on both sides. Fluff out the petals until your paper flower is round and full.
- stack:
- To pile objects neatly on top of one another.
- narrow:
- Long and thin, not wide.
- knot:
- A place where string or yarn is tied tightly together.
- layer:
- A single sheet or thickness of material resting on another.
- petals:
- The soft, colorful outer parts of a flower.
