How to Play the Partner Pattern Game

Goal: Work with a partner to build, copy, and check colorful paper patterns.
Materials Needed:
- One bowl or plastic cup of colored paper squares (red, blue, yellow, and green)
- One sheet of white paper for each player
- A pencil
Directions:
-
Pick Roles: Choose who will be Player 1 and who will be Player 2 for the first round.
-
Make a Pattern: Player 1 reaches into the bowl and picks out paper squares. Line up the squares on your white paper to make a repeating pattern. You can make an AB pattern (like red, blue, red, blue) or an ABC pattern (like red, yellow, green, red, yellow, green). Use at least six squares so the rule is easy to see.
-
Cover and Hide: While Player 1 builds the secret pattern, Player 2 covers their eyes or turns around. When the pattern is ready, Player 1 places a book or folder upright like a wall between the two desks.
-
Copy the Pattern: Player 1 removes the folder and lets Player 2 look at the line of squares. Player 2 looks closely at the colors. Next, Player 2 finds matching squares in the bowl and builds the exact same pattern on their own paper.
- pattern:
- A repeated design or arrangement of colors, shapes, or numbers that follows a rule.
- repeating:
- Happening or showing up again and again in the same order.
- upright:
- Standing straight up rather than lying down flat.
- extend:
- To make something longer by adding more to the end.
- roles:
- The special jobs or parts that players take during a game.
