How to Play the Shape Sort Game

Goal of the Game
Work with a partner to sort paper shapes into groups. You will practice using your eyes to spot patterns and take turns fairly.
Materials Needed
- One envelope of paper shapes (circles, squares, and triangles in red, blue, and yellow)
- Two paper plates or sorting mats
- One small counter or coin
How to Decide Who Goes First
Place the small counter in one hand. Put both hands behind your back. Bring out two closed fists. Your partner guesses which hand holds the counter. If your partner guesses right, your partner goes first. If not, you take the first turn.
Round 1: Sort by Color
- Empty the envelope of shapes into the center of the table.
- Label one plate "Red" and the other plate "Blue." Put yellow shapes back into the envelope for this round.
- The first player picks up one shape, says its color out loud, and places it on the matching plate.
- The second player takes a turn and places the next shape on a plate.
- Keep trading turns until the table is clear. Check each other's work to make sure every shape landed in the right spot.
