Your body is like a busy machine. It needs fuel to run and play. Food is the fuel that gives you energy. Digestion is the way your body turns food into that energy. This long process starts as soon as you take a bite of your lunch. Your teeth crush the food into very small bits. Your spit makes the food wet and soft. Now the food is ready to travel down your body.

After you swallow, the food goes down a long tube. This tube is called the esophagus. It is like a soft slide for your food. The muscles in the tube squeeze and push the food down. It goes all the way from your throat to your stomach. This trip is very fast and easy. You do not even have to think about it. Your body does all the work for you.

The stomach is like a big, stretchy bag. It acts like a mixer for your food. The stomach uses special juices to mash the food into a thick liquid. This liquid looks a bit like a thick soup. The food stays in your stomach for a few hours. Your stomach walls move to mix everything together. This helps break the food down into even smaller parts. Then the food is ready for the next stop.

The food moves from the stomach into the small intestine. This is a very long and thin tube. It is coiled up like a rope inside your belly. This is the most important part of the journey. Your body takes the good parts from the food here. These good parts are called nutrients. Nutrients help you grow tall and stay strong. They go into your blood to reach every part of your body.

Not all food can be used by your body. The leftover parts move into the large intestine. This tube is wider but much shorter. It takes out the water from the waste. The waste becomes solid and stays there for a while. Then the waste leaves your body when you go to the bathroom. Drinking plenty of water helps your body do this job. Your digestive system is an amazing team that keeps you healthy.
