Have you ever put on a special headset and felt like you were in a different world? You might have been experiencing virtual reality, or VR! One of the people who helped make this possible is Jaron Lanier. He's known as a pioneer in the world of VR.
Early Life and Education
Jaron Lanier was born in New York City in 1960. From a young age, he loved science and technology. He was a very smart kid and even skipped a few grades in school! Lanier didn't go to college right away. Instead, he explored different ideas and taught himself about computers and math. Later, he went to New Mexico State University to study computer science, but he left before graduating to pursue his own projects.
Coining the Term "Virtual Reality"
Lanier is famous for coming up with the term "virtual reality." He started a company called VPL Research in the 1980s. This company made some of the very first VR headsets and gloves. Imagine being one of the first people to try on a headset and see a whole new world appear before your eyes! It must have been an amazing experience!
