Journal of a Pioneer: Departure from Independence
May 10, 1846 ā Independence, Missouri
Today our family finally arrived in Independence, the bustling town where our great adventure begins. Everywhere you look, there are heavy canvas-covered wagons, bellowing oxen, and trail traders shouting orders. Papa says Independence is the grand jumping-off point where pioneers gather to buy supplies before heading out onto the vast prairie along the Santa Fe Trail.
We spent the entire afternoon purchasing goods at the crowded town square. Papa bought large sacks of flour, dried beans, barrels of salted pork, and sturdy iron tools. Mama insisted on getting extra tallow grease for the wagon wheels, along with thick leather boots for my brother Eli and me. The storekeeper told us that hundreds of wagons pass through Missouri every spring. The town feels bursting with energy and excitement, though I can see a quiet shadow of worry in Mamaās eyes whenever she gazes toward the western horizon.
