Keeping Presque Isle Beautiful: Should Kids Join Beach Clean-Ups?

Presque Isle State Park, a beautiful sandy peninsula stretching into Lake Erie, is a favorite destination for thousands of families every summer. Visitors come to swim in the lake waves, hike through coastal forests, and watch colorful sunsets over the water. However, an important debate has emerged among visitors and local park officials: should children visiting Presque Isle spend part of their trip participating in organized beach clean-up volunteer programs? While some people believe vacations should strictly be for relaxation, young visitors should definitely take part in these environmental clean-up efforts.

First and foremost, volunteering helps protect the delicate ecosystem of Presque Isle. Each year, trash such as plastic bottles, food wrappers, and discarded fishing lines washes ashore or is left behind by crowds. This litter poses a serious threat to wildlife. Shorebirds, fish, and freshwater turtles can easily mistake plastic debris for food or get tangled in trash. When children spend even an hour gathering litter along the shore, they directly prevent animals from getting hurt.
