Life Aboard an Ocean Giant

Take a look around your classroom or home. Your sneakers, the fruit on your kitchen counter, and the computer screen you read from probably traveled across thousands of miles of open ocean. Huge cargo vessels carry the vast majority of goods bought and sold around the world. These massive steel ships are practically floating towns that cross rough seas for weeks at a time. To keep these voyages safe and on schedule, a dedicated team of seafarers works around the clock.
At the top of the vessel sits the bridge, the control center where navigation takes place. Here, ship officers keep a constant lookout across the horizon. Modern navigation relies heavily on digital radar screens, global positioning systems, and automated tracking maps to monitor ocean depths and weather patterns. Even with advanced technology, human vigilance is essential. Officers regularly consult paper nautical charts and sweep the water with binoculars to spot small fishing boats or drifting obstacles that computer sensors might miss. The captain, who holds overall responsibility for the ship, works with the deck officers to steer along deep-water routes and coordinate communications with distant coast guards.
