Life Between the Tides: The Rocky Tide Pool Habitat

Along ocean shorelines where stone meets the sea, rocky tide pools create unique marine communities. These pools form in depressions, crevices, and hollows carved out of coastal rock. Tide pools belong to the intertidal zone, which is the strip of seashore covered by water during high tide and exposed to air during low tide. As the tide rises and falls, creatures living here must cope with changing water and air conditions.
Tides are influenced by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun. On many coasts, the water rises and falls twice a day. When high tide rolls in, deep water surges over the rocks, completely submerging the area in cold, rushing seawater. For tide-pool animals, high tide brings a rush of fresh oxygen, floating nutrients, and microscopic food. However, it also brings heavy waves that can slam against the rocks with immense force, threatening to sweep organisms out to sea.
