Luma's Paper Bridge

High atop the long oak workbench in the clockmaker's workshop, a tiny brass robot named Luma hummed with purpose. Luma was no taller than a teacup, equipped with whirring gear joints and curious amber optical sensors that blinked whenever a new idea sparked. The workshop was a bustling sanctuary for small wonders—tin grasshoppers leaped among brass cogwheels, and carved wooden mice nested inside hollow spools of thread.
One breezy afternoon, a newcomer arrived at the edge of the adjacent drafting table. It was Barnaby, a small wooden toy boat mounted on polished wooden wheels. Barnaby had rolled across dusty floorboards and navigated perilous rug fringes for days, seeking a safe harbor away from the drafty cellar vents. Now, Barnaby was stranded on the far table, gazing wistfully across a wide, three-foot chasm toward the warm sunlight beaming onto the workbench.
"The divide is too deep to cross!" Barnaby called out, his painted hull creaking with weariness. "I only seek a peaceful corner where my wheels can rest."
Some of the older metal toys hesitated, murmuring about whether there was enough oil and space on their table for an outsider. But Luma did not hesitate. Every traveler deserved a welcome after such a long journey.
