Miles Finds the Bridge

Miles and his family visit New River Gorge in West Virginia. They walk to a spot high above the deep gorge. Miles hopes to see the New River Gorge Bridge.
But when they get there, a cloud of fog hides the view. Miles looks through the rail. All he can see is white.
“Where is the bridge?” he asks.
“It is out there,” Dad says. “Let’s wait a bit.”
Miles leans against the rail. He hears a bird call from a tree. Then he hears a soft rush far below.
“Is that the river?” he asks.
Mom nods. “The New River runs through the gorge.”
Miles tries to see it, but the fog is still too thick. He sits on a bench with his sister, Kate.
“I wish the fog would go,” he says.
Kate points. “Look! I can see a tree.”
Soon Miles can see more trees. The fog lifts a little at a time. A dark shape peeks through it.
“The bridge!” Miles says.
First he sees just one part. Then the rest comes into view. The long bridge reaches from one side of the gorge to the other. Its big steel arch curves high above the river.
Miles stands beside Mom and Dad. The cars on the bridge look tiny from so far away.
