MAPLEWOOD — A tiny new museum opened its doors on Saturday inside the sunny hallway of the Maplewood Community Center. The Maplewood Mini-Museum features more than forty colorful drawings created by local third-grade students. Instead of showing giant dinosaur bones or priceless golden statues, this special gallery highlights familiar, everyday objects found right along the town's sidewalks.

The project began two months ago when neighborhood organizer Elena Rivera noticed how closely children observe their surroundings. She invited local students to participate in an art hunt. The rules were simple. Each young artist had to choose one ordinary object that people walk past every single day without noticing. Then, the student had to sketch that object carefully and write a short label explaining why it matters to the neighborhood.

Over the next few weeks, students explored their blocks with sketchpads in hand. They chose a wide variety of subjects. Some drew bright yellow fire hydrants, patterned drain covers, and wooden telephone poles. Others sketched chipped park benches, metal crosswalk buttons, and sturdy mailboxes. Ms. Rivera collected the finished drawings and mounted them in simple cardboard frames made from recycled cereal boxes.
