More Than One Uniform: The Many Roles of U.S. Veterans

When people think of a military veteran, they often picture someone who served in combat. A veteran is any person who has served in the armed forces, such as the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Space Force. However, military service includes much more than the front lines. In fact, a large part of the military works behind the scenes. For every person in a combat role, several others work in support jobs that keep teams safe, healthy, and connected. Because the armed forces operate like floating cities, busy airfields, and large bases, they rely on hundreds of different careers.
Care and Medical Support
One of the most important support areas is healthcare. Military doctors, nurses, medics, and dental technicians care for service members at bases and aboard ships. Some medical workers run laboratories or manage pharmacies, while others help injured people recover through physical therapy. During emergencies or natural disasters, military medical teams often travel to help civilians—people who are not in the armed forces—by setting up temporary hospitals and delivering clean water and medicine.
