Operation Courtyard Cupid

Rosally considered herself an artist whose medium was human connection. While other seventh graders occupied their spare time with soccer drills or video games, Rosally observed hallway dynamics with the tactical precision of a chess grandmaster. Clutched beneath her arm was a leather-bound notebook she labeled The Cupid Chronicles, filled with meticulous charts connecting various classmates with speculative arrows. Rosally was convinced she possessed a supernatural intuition for romance, regardless of evidence to the contrary. When Liam and Sarah shared an eraser in third period and subsequently never spoke again, Rosally had proudly noted it as a triumph of simmering emotional tension.

On a brisk Tuesday morning, Rosally crouched beside the hallway water fountain, pretending to adjust her shoelaces while conducting routine surveillance. Just around the corner of the locker bay, Julian was pacing anxiously while his friend Devon leaned against a wall of faded blue lockers.

"I honestly can't sleep, Devon," Julian groaned, running a hand through his perpetually messy brown hair. "Every time she looks at me, my hands shake and my mind goes blank. I've spent three solid weeks preparing the proposal, but if she shoots me down at our three o'clock meeting, my entire year is ruined. I need a dramatic gesture, something that shows total devotion."
