On September 1, 1979, a small spacecraft flew past a giant planet surrounded by rings. It was Pioneer 11, and it was the first spacecraft ever to visit Saturn. Its brief encounter gave scientists a closer look at a world they had previously studied from far away.

Pioneer 11 was a NASA spacecraft launched in 1973. Its journey took it first to Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. In 1974, the spacecraft passed close to Jupiter and used the planet’s gravity to change its path. This maneuver, called a gravity assist, sent Pioneer 11 toward Saturn without requiring it to carry enough fuel to make the whole turn on its own.

Unlike a spacecraft designed to stay at a planet, Pioneer 11 made a flyby. It traveled past Saturn, gathered information during the encounter, and then continued into space. A flyby gives a spacecraft a limited time to make observations, but it can still collect valuable information along its route.

As Pioneer 11 approached Saturn, its instruments studied the planet, its rings, and the space around it. The spacecraft came within about 13,000 miles of Saturn’s cloud tops. That may sound far away, but it was close compared with the enormous distance between Saturn and Earth.
