Artists within the Neo-Impressionist circle, such as Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, led this investigation, yet painters within the movement did not all work identically. While some favored microscopic, tightly clustered dots, others experimented with squarer, mosaic-like touches or slightly broader dashes of color, demonstrating that the scientific approach still left room for personal variation.

This systematic precision offers a stark comparison to earlier movements like Romanticism, where painters prioritized raw emotion, turbulent drama, and sweeping, expressive brushstrokes over scientific calculation. In Romantic works, the brushstroke conveyed the stormy feelings of the individual artist; in Pointillism, the individual dot was subordinated to an overall optical system.
