Portugal Day: Land, Language, and Community

Every year on June 10, people around the world celebrate a special holiday known as Portugal Day. Its full official name translates to the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities. Unlike holidays that mark a famous battle or the signing of a declaration of independence, this celebration focuses on a country's culture, its shared language, and the bonds that connect its people across the globe.
Portugal is located on the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. With its long coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, the nation has always had a deep relationship with the sea. Centuries ago, Portuguese navigators set sail across vast waters, exploring new trade routes and reaching distant continents. Because of these long journeys, the Portuguese language spread far beyond Europe. Today, millions of people across several continents speak Portuguese as their native language.
