Growing up along the Allegheny River in Springdale, Pennsylvania, Rachel Carson spent her childhood exploring woods, fields, and streams. Born in 1907, she developed two great passions early in life: literature and the natural world. Carson published her first story in a children's magazine when she was just ten years old. When she entered Pennsylvania College for Women, she initially planned to study English. However, an inspiring biology course altered her path. Carson chose to major in biology instead, a decision that surprised her peers because very few women in the 1920s pursued careers in professional science.

After graduating, Carson continued her studies at Johns Hopkins University, earning a master's degree in marine zoology. The Great Depression brought deep economic hardships, and following the death of her father, Carson became the primary financial provider for her mother and extended family. To support them, she took a position with the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, which later became part of the Fish and Wildlife Service. Her job combined both of her lifelong interests. She wrote radio scripts explaining aquatic biology to the general public, translated complex scientific reports into engaging educational pamphlets, and eventually rose to become the agency's editor-in-chief of publications.
