Rusty's Path Home

The afternoon sunlight filtered through the golden leaves of Whispering Pines Forest, casting playful shadows on the mossy ground. Rusty, a curious young red fox with copper-colored fur and bright amber eyes, bounded excitedly after a dried maple leaf as it tumbled in the breeze. Nearby, his mother rested beside the hollowed entrance of their den beneath a tangle of old spruce roots.
"Stay close to the clearing, Rusty," his mother warned with a soft, affectionate nudge. "The shadows stretch long in the autumn, and the woods become confusing once the sun dips behind the ridge."
Rusty gave a quick nod, his bushy tail sweeping against the damp earth. For a while, he happily pounced on twigs and investigated beetle tracks in the dirt. Suddenly, a brilliant flash of iridescent blue darted past his nose. It was a river dragonfly, shimmering like a piece of polished glass. Without thinking, Rusty leaped forward. The dragonfly fluttered just out of reach, hovering teasingly above a patch of wild ferns before darting toward the winding creek.
