Samuel's Flathead Valley Journal
May 12, 1889
Dear Diary,
We finally made it. After three long months of travel across bumpy, dusty trails, our covered wagon rolled to a stop in the Flathead Valley today. When Pa pulled the horses to a halt, Ma stepped down, wiped the dust off her apron, and wept quiet tears of relief. I jumped out next, my legs feeling stiff and wobbly after sitting inside the wagon for so many miles.
Looking out across the valley, I lost my breath. The land stretches out wide and flat, covered in rich green grass that sways in the spring breeze like a vast ocean. Surrounding the entire valley are jagged, snow-capped mountains that look like sharp white teeth touching the bright blue sky. Below the peaks, thick pine forests cover the hillsides, smelling sweet and fresh. Best of all, a sparkling river winds right through the middle of the valley, cold and clear as melted ice. Pa knelt by the riverbank, scooped up a handful of dark, damp soil, and let it crumble through his fingers. "This is good earth, Samuel," he said with a proud smile. "We can build a real life here."
