A worn glove and a baseball beside the pitching mound might bring to mind the long history of a ballfield. For many baseball fans, that history includes Leroy “Satchel” Paige, a pitcher whose talent carried him from the Negro Leagues to the major leagues and, finally, to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Paige was born in Mobile, Alabama, in 1906. He grew up at a time when racial segregation kept Black and white Americans apart in many parts of life. As a young person, he spent time at a reform school, where he developed his pitching skills. Those skills would make him famous far beyond his hometown.

In the 1920s, Paige began playing professional baseball. Black players were barred from the major leagues because of an unwritten rule based on race. Instead, many played in the Negro Leagues, professional leagues made up largely of Black players. These leagues gave talented athletes a place to compete, even though segregation kept them from the opportunities and recognition available to white major leaguers.

Paige played for several Negro League teams, including the Pittsburgh Crawfords and the Kansas City Monarchs. He also traveled widely to play games against other professional and local teams. The games gave fans in many places a chance to see his pitching.
