Wilbur Wright, born on April 16, 1867, near Millville, Indiana, was a visionary whose quiet determination and relentless curiosity helped alter the course of human history. As the elder brother in the famous Wright duo, Wilbur possessed a keen analytical mind and an extraordinary ability to solve complex mechanical problems. Although his family moved several times during his childhood due to his father's work as a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Wilbur’s early years in eastern Indiana planted the seeds of a lifelong passion for learning, experimentation, and mechanical design.

Growing up in Indiana and later Ohio, Wilbur was encouraged by his parents to pursue knowledge relentlessly. His mother, Susan Koerner Wright, was particularly skilled at mechanical work and taught her children how to design and build simple tools and household gadgets. A pivotal moment in Wilbur's childhood occurred when his father brought home a small toy helicopter powered by a rubber band. Constructed of bamboo, paper, and cork, the device fascinated Wilbur and his younger brother, Orville.
