In 1900, after years of corresponding with leading scientists and gathering meteorological data, Wilbur selected Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, as the ideal site for their flight experiments due to its strong winds and soft sand landings. Over three grueling years of testing gliders, during which Wilbur served as the primary strategist and test pilot, the brothers perfected their aerodynamic controls. On December 17, 1903, their efforts culminated in the world’s first controlled, powered, and sustained heavier-than-air flight. Although Orville piloted the first flight of that momentous day, Wilbur logged the longest flight, covering 852 feet in 59 seconds.
Following their success at Kitty Hawk, Wilbur traveled across Europe and the United States to demonstrate their flying machine, captivating world leaders, scientists, and the public. His modest demeanor, unwavering focus, and intellectual brilliance earned him international acclaim.
