Let's learn about how a frog grows. It is a very cool story.
A frog's life has many different steps. This is called a cycle.
A mother frog goes to a quiet pond. She lays her eggs in the water.
The eggs stick together in a big bunch. This helps keep them safe.
The eggs are soft and round. Inside each egg, a tiny frog is starting to grow.
The sun warms the water. This helps the eggs get ready to hatch.
In a few weeks, the eggs open up. Tiny tadpoles swim out into the pond.
They do not have legs yet. They have a long, wiggly tail for swimming.
Tadpoles stay under the water. They breathe through gills on the sides of their heads.
They eat tiny green plants called algae. They swim and eat all day long.
As the tadpole grows, its body begins to change.
First, you will see two little bumps near the tail. These bumps grow into back legs.
The legs have webbed feet. This helps the tadpole swim fast.
Soon, the tadpole grows two front legs. Now it has four legs!
Its mouth gets wider and its eyes get bigger. It looks very different.
Something amazing is happening inside too. The tadpole's gills go away.
It grows lungs so it can breathe air. Now it can breathe just like we do.
The tail is also changing. It gets shorter and shorter every single day.
The tadpole's body uses the tail for energy as it grows.
When the tail is almost gone, it is called a froglet.
The froglet can climb out of the water. It sits on a rock or a log to rest.
Finally, the tail is all gone. The frog is now an adult.
It has strong back legs for jumping very far. It can hop through the grass.
The adult frog eats insects like flies and beetles.
It uses a sticky tongue to catch them very fast. Zip!
The frog lives near the water to stay wet. Its skin needs to stay damp and cool.
When the frog is ready, it will find a pond. It will lay its own eggs.
This circle of life never ends. Each new egg starts the story again.
