Rather than giving up, Tu returned to ancient literature for clues. Her breakthrough came when she read a text written in 340 CE by the Daoist alchemist Ge Hong, titled A Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies. The text advised soaking a handful of sweet wormwood in water and wringing out the juice. Tu realized that the standard modern extraction method, which used boiling water, was destroying the active ingredients in the plant. By switching to a low-temperature, ether-based extraction process, she successfully isolated a highly potent compound. She named it qinghaosu, known in the West as artemisinin.
The path to proving the compound's efficacy was fraught with danger. To ensure the safety of the new drug before clinical trials, Tu Youyou and two of her colleagues courageously volunteered to be the first human subjects to ingest the extract. After proving it was safe, clinical trials in the field showed that artemisinin cleared malaria parasites from patients' bloodstreams with astonishing speed. Despite the monumental nature of this discovery, the secretive nature of Project 523 and the political climate of the Cultural Revolution meant that Tu's work remained largely anonymous for decades.
Recognition finally arrived on the global stage in the 21st century. In 2015, Tu Youyou was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, becoming the first Chinese woman to receive this prestigious honor. Her discovery of artemisinin has saved millions of lives, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. Today, Tu Youyou’s legacy stands as a testament to the power of combining ancient cultural wisdom with rigorous modern scientific inquiry, proving that sometimes the answers to our most modern crises lie hidden in the pages of history.
