The Big Shot at Sunset

Leo wakes up early every Saturday. He eats a big bowl of cereal for breakfast. Then, he grabs his basketball from the garage. The ball is orange and round. It has a rough texture and black lines. Leo walks down the street to the local park. The park is very quiet in the morning. The grass is green and the trees sway in the wind. Leo likes the basketball court because the ground is flat and smooth.

He starts with a simple warm-up. He dribbles the ball with his right hand first. Then, he switches to his left hand. He moves fast across the court. His sneakers make a loud squeaking sound on the ground. Leo looks at the hoop. The net is made of white nylon. It hangs from a bright red metal rim. Leo takes a deep breath. He bends his knees and jumps. He shoots the ball into the air. It flies in a high arc. The ball hits the backboard and falls through the net. Swish! Leo smiles because he loves that sound.

Soon, his friend Maya arrives at the park. Maya carries a water bottle and wears a blue headband. She is a very good basketball player. She moves quickly and has a strong shot. "Do you want to play a game?" Maya asks. Leo nods his head. They start a game of one-on-one. Leo dribbles the ball toward the hoop, but Maya blocks his path. She moves her feet from side to side. She stays right in front of him. Leo passes the ball to himself and tries to spin. Maya reaches out and steals the ball. She runs to the other side and makes a layup. The score is one to zero.

The game continues for a long time. Both friends work very hard. They sweat under the warm sun. Leo makes a long shot from the corner of the court. Maya makes a beautiful jump shot from the middle. They cheer for each other even though they are rivals. "Good job!" Leo says when Maya scores a point. "Nice shot!" Maya yells when Leo hits the rim. They take a short break to drink water. The water is cold and refreshing. They sit together on a wooden bench near the court.

"I want to try a three-point shot," Leo says. He points to the long, curved line on the ground. It is far away from the hoop. Maya looks at the line. "That is a very far distance," she says. "But I think you can do it if you try." Leo stands behind the line. He dribbles the ball exactly three times. He looks at the basket and focuses on the rim. His heart beats fast in his chest. He jumps high and pushes the ball with his fingertips. The ball spins through the air.

The ball reaches the hoop. It bounces on the front of the rim. Then, it bounces on the back of the rim. It circles around the edge for a second. Finally, it drops through the net. Leo cheers and jumps up and down. Maya claps her hands for her friend. "You did it!" she shouts. The sun begins to set behind the tall trees. The sky turns beautiful shades of pink and orange. Leo and Maya are tired, but they are very happy. They walk home together and talk about their favorite players. Leo wants to practice again tomorrow. He loves the game of basketball.
