In a tiny house on Jackson Street in Gary, Indiana, music was as common as dinner. Joseph and Katherine Jackson raised ten children in a home with only two bedrooms, and the living room often doubled as a rehearsal studio. Born on August 29, 1958, Michael Joseph Jackson was the eighth child in the family. While his older brothers practiced singing and playing instruments after school, young Michael watched their every move, tapping his feet and mimicking the sharp spins of soul singer James Brown.

By 1964, Michael and his brother Marlon joined their older brothers—Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine—to form a musical group. Their father, who worked as a crane operator at a local steel mill, became their strict manager. He pushed the boys to practice for hours every afternoon. Before long, seven-year-old Michael became the group's lead vocalist. Even as a child, he sang with surprising power and timing, catching the attention of audiences across the Midwest.
