The Case of the Missing Affirmation Jar

LEO: (staring at the empty corner of the front counter) Maya, look! The affirmation jar is totally gone!
MAYA: (hurrying over with wide eyes) That is impossible, Leo. Mrs. Gable keeps it right here next to the reading rug. Friday circle starts in exactly eight minutes!
LEO: We need those slips of paper. The whole fourth grade spent all week writing kind compliments to each other. If the jar vanished, circle time is ruined.
MAYA: Do not panic yet. A great detective gathers evidence before making wild guesses. What was the last thing you saw before recess?
LEO: Sam was putting a yellow note inside right before the bell rang. He slipped it through the lid slot, patted the glass, and walked out the door.
MAYA: Okay, good observation. That proves the jar did not disappear during morning math. It vanished during recess while the room was supposedly empty.
LEO: Wait! Look down by your sneakers. Do you see what I see?
MAYA: (bending down to examine the linoleum) A tiny pinch of purple sparkle dust! The affirmation jar has a wide purple ribbon wrapped around the rim, tied in a glittery bow.
LEO: (kneeling beside her) The glitter leaves a trail. It leads away from the front counter and heads toward the science station in the back.
