The Christmas Market Mystery
A crisp December breeze swirled through the Oakhaven town square, carrying the rich scents of spiced apple cider, roasted chestnuts, and fresh pine needles. Overhead, strings of golden fairy lights crisscrossed between the peaked roofs of wooden stalls, illuminating the bustling crowd that had gathered for the annual holiday market. Maya and her best friend Leo wove through the throng toward the far corner of the plaza, where Mrs. Gable stood looking thoroughly bewildered behind a half-empty table.
"Is everything all right, Mrs. Gable?" Maya asked, adjusting her woolen scarf.
"Oh, goodness, children, I’m afraid not," Mrs. Gable replied, wiping her hands on her apron. "The community youth center relies on the proceeds from our hand-carved wooden ornaments every year. I had just unpacked the first few when the delivery cart arrived with extra folding tables. When the commotion cleared, the main wooden crate—packed with forty of our best ornaments—was completely gone!"
Leo leaned over the counter, his sharp eyes scanning the immediate area. "Did anyone see where it went?"
"No, but whoever moved it must have been in an awful hurry," Mrs. Gable sighed. "I had already spent the morning sticking our special green-and-gold star price tags onto every piece. Without those ornaments to sell tonight, our winter art workshop won't have enough supplies."
