June 8

Dear Diary,

Today Mom and I drove on Skyline Drive. It runs through Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.

We stopped at a public overlook. An overlook is a place to stop and see the view.

I got out of the car and took a big breath. The air felt cool on my face.

Far below us, trees covered the hills. The hills looked blue in the soft light.

I wanted to draw them. I sat on a bench and took out my sketchbook.

First I drew a long, wavy line. Then I drew a hill behind it.

But just as I picked up my blue crayon, a cloud slid over the view. The hills were gone!

“Oh, no,” I said. “I didn’t get to finish.”

Mom sat next to me. “We can wait a bit,” she said.

The cloud wrapped around us like a damp blanket. Tiny drops clung to the bench.

I held out my hand. My skin felt wet, but I could not see a single drop fall.

Then I heard a bird sing. I could not see it, so I drew a small bird on my page.

A little later, the cloud began to drift away. One hill came back, and then another.
