The Colorful Cloth of the Maya

The Maya people live in a warm place called Central America. They are famous for making beautiful clothes with many colors.

They have made these clothes for a very long time. They use things from nature to make their art.

To make clothes, they first grow soft white cotton. They spin the cotton into long pieces of string called yarn.

Next, they want to make the yarn look bright and pretty. They look for colors in the world around them.

They use plants and even tiny bugs to make dye. They find a plant called indigo to make deep blue dye.

They find tiny red bugs that live on cactus plants. They crush the bugs to make a very bright red color.

The Maya boil the yarn in big pots with the dye. The white yarn turns into bright blue, red, or yellow yarn.

Now it is time to weave the yarn into a piece of cloth. The Maya use a special tool called a backstrap loom.

This loom does not stand on the floor like a big machine. One end of the loom is tied to a strong tree.

The other end has a strap that goes around the weaver's waist. The weaver sits on the ground and leans back.

They move their body to keep the strings very tight. Then they slide the colorful yarn over and under the strings.

This is how they make wonderful patterns. They can weave shapes like stars, birds, and flowers.

The patterns tell stories about their families and their land. The colors show the beauty of the forest and the sun.

Maya families have made cloth this way for hundreds of years. Even today, many people still wear these bright and happy clothes.
