The Colors of Tenochtitlan: A Student’s Journey

Today, the sun rose over the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan, casting a golden light on the city of water. I woke early in the Calmecac, the school where we are trained to serve the empire. My bones were a bit stiff from the cold floor, but my heart was racing with excitement. Today was the day I would finally be allowed to mix the deep red pigment from the cochineal insects. To become a Tlacuilo—a master painter—is a great honor, but it requires years of steady hands and a perfect memory.

Our master, a wise elder with many wrinkles around his eyes, led us to the scriptorium. The room smelled of dried herbs and the earthy scent of the lake. On the long wooden tables sat scrolls of amatl, the sacred bark paper we use for our books. The paper is rough to the touch, but once it is coated with white lime, it becomes as smooth as a polished shell. Master told us that a codex is not just a book; it is the heartbeat of our people. I spent the first few hours of the morning grinding soot to make the black ink for the outlines. Precision is everything. I watched as my friend Huemac tried to draw the symbol for a jaguar. His hand wobbled just a little, and the master shook his head. ‘The line must be as strong as the warrior it represents,’ the master whispered. I took a deep breath and dipped my brush made of fine animal hair into the black ink. I had to draw the glyph for 'water.' I concentrated on the flowing curves and the small shells at the ends of the lines. When I finished, the master nodded silently. It was the best praise I could have received.

By midday, we moved on to the colors. This is the most difficult part. Each color has a meaning. Yellow represents the sun and the food that keeps us alive, while blue is the color of the sky and the great Tlaloc, the god of rain. I was finally allowed to touch the cochineal. These tiny insects are gathered from the prickly pear cactus and dried until they look like gray pebbles. But when you crush them and mix them with water, they create a red so bright it looks like the setting sun. I carefully filled in the shield of a painted lord, making sure the red did not bleed over the black lines.

My back ached from leaning over the paper, and my fingers were stained with five different colors. However, as I looked at the page, I felt a sense of pride. The symbols seemed to vibrate with life. We spent the rest of the afternoon learning how to read the ancient scrolls that tell the story of how our ancestors traveled to this valley. The symbols are a code that only the educated can crack. Every dot and every feather has a specific sound or idea attached to it.

As the evening incense began to burn in the temple nearby, we cleaned our brushes and stored our paints in clay jars. The life of a student is hard, and the discipline is strict, but I do not mind. Tonight, I will sleep and dream of the vibrant reds and deep blues. Tomorrow, I will return to the scriptorium to continue my work.
