The Compassionate Builder: The Life of King Jayavarman VII
In the twelfth century, the Khmer Empire of Southeast Asia reached the pinnacle of its political and cultural influence under the reign of King Jayavarman VII. Widely regarded as one of Cambodia's greatest sovereigns, Jayavarman VII transformed his kingdom not only through military conquest and monumental architecture but also through an unprecedented commitment to the welfare of his subjects. His legacy is etched permanently into the stone of Angkor, the empire’s ancient capital, where his grand designs still captivate visitors from around the world.
Born around 1125, Jayavarman VII lived during a turbulent era. For much of his early life, he remained a prince in exile, watching from afar as internal rebellions and external threats weakened the Khmer state. The crisis reached a boiling point in 1177 when the rival kingdom of Champa launched a devastating surprise invasion, capturing and plundering the Khmer capital of Angkor. Demonstrating remarkable military strategy and leadership, Jayavarman rallied the Khmer forces, waged a successful war of liberation, and expelled the invaders. In 1181, at the age of roughly fifty-six, he was crowned king, embarking on a long reign that would redefine the empire.
