Eleven-year-old Rowan adjusted his brass visor and peered down into the subterranean canyon. Far below the mountain's surface, the Sunless Sea churned against jagged black rocks. For three years, a supernatural drought had dried the upper valleys of Oakhaven, leaving the townspeople helpless and their fields brown. According to the ancient maps Rowan had studied, the stolen Crown of Clouds was hidden somewhere inside this underground cavern. If he could recover and return the powerful artifact, rain would shower the parched soil once again.

"Stay close, Scout," Rowan whispered to his loyal hound, who crouched beside him on the narrow stone ledge.

The dog let out a low, doubtful whine. With his superior sense of smell and sharp night vision, Scout could detect things that remained completely invisible to human eyes. Still, the fearless boy and his watchful companion began their descent, carefully retracing the crumbling steps carved by miners centuries ago.

As they reached the cavern floor, a loud, echoing growl bounced off the damp stone walls. Out from the shadows stepped a towering figure made entirely of living stone and glowing blue crystal. It was the Subterranean Warden, a tireless guardian built to supervise the deep vaults. The creature scowled, raising a massive boulder above its head.
