The Fire-Defying Wonders of Table Mountain
Rising high above the city of Cape Town, South Africa, is a massive, flat-topped landmark known as Table Mountain. While its shape is famous worldwide, the mountain holds an even greater wonder on its rocky slopes. It is home to one of the most diverse plant kingdoms on Earth, called the fynbos (pronounced feen-boss).
Fynbos is an Afrikaans word that means "fine bush." This unique shrubland is packed with thousands of different plant species, many of which cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. In fact, there are more plant species on Table Mountain alone than in the entire United Kingdom! The fynbos is famous for three main plant families: the colorful, cup-shaped proteas, the bell-like ericas, and the reed-like restios. Together, they create a colorful blanket across the mountain.
However, life on Table Mountain is not always peaceful. During the hot, dry summer months, strong winds sweep across the cliffs, and wildfires frequently break out. To most plants, fire is a deadly disaster. But to the fynbos, fire is a vital part of life. Over millions of years, these plants have developed incredible tricks to survive—and even thrive—in the ashes.
