Located on the northeastern coast of Brazil, in the state of Maranhão, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park presents one of the most ecologically unique and visually stunning landscapes on Earth. Spanning over 155,000 hectares, this protected area initially resembles a vast, undulating desert. However, despite its appearance, Lençóis Maranhenses is not a true desert. The region experiences an abundant annual rainfall of about 1,200 to 1,600 millimeters, almost all of which falls between January and May. This seasonal deluge transforms the landscape, filling the valleys between towering white sand dunes with crystal-clear, freshwater lagoons. The resulting juxtaposition of stark, windswept sand and vibrant turquoise pools creates a dynamic, ephemeral ecosystem found nowhere else on the globe.
