MS. SHANNON: [Adjusting her glasses and checking a glowing holographic monitor] Everything is calibrated, Holden. The temporal displacement coordinates are locked into the summer of 1992. It is the height of the Dream Team era. Are you absolutely certain you want your graduation gift to be a one-way ticket to the most difficult basketball court in history?

HOLDEN: [Tugging on the brim of his oversized North Carolina baseball cap] Ms. Shannon, I’ve spent every afternoon since the third grade practicing my fadeaway in the driveway. I’ve watched every grainy VHS tape of the Chicago playoffs. I don’t just want to see Michael Jordan play; I want to see if North Carolina’s finest can handle a kid from the future. I’m ready.

MS. SHANNON: [Smiling warmly, her long black hair catching the light of the machine] You have the heart of a champion, Holden. Remember, the machine will only hold the rift open for exactly forty-eight minutes—the length of a professional game. Once the final buzzer sounds, the Chronos-Hoop will pull you back to this lab in present-day North Carolina. Do not lose your focus. To beat the greatest, you must be better than your own best.

HOLDEN: I won’t let you down. Thank you for believing in me, and thank you for building this thing. Best graduation gift ever!

[Holden steps into the shimmering blue light of the portal. There is a loud hum, a flash of white, and he vanishes. Ms. Shannon watches the clock nervously, pacing the lab for what feels like hours. Suddenly, the portal erupts again, and Holden falls out onto the lab floor, breathless and sweating, clutching a scuffed basketball.]

MS. SHANNON: [Rushing over to help him up] Holden! You’re back! You look like you’ve just run a marathon through a furnace. Tell me everything. Did the jump work? Did you find him?

HOLDEN: [Gasping for air, a massive grin spreading across his face] I found him, Ms. Shannon. I landed right in the middle of a private practice session at a hidden gym in Chicago. It was 1992. The air smelled like old leather and floor wax. He was there, wearing the red and black, just like in the legends.

MS. SHANNON: And? Did he talk to you? A ten-year-old boy appearing out of thin air in an oversized cap must have been quite the shock for the greatest player on Earth.

HOLDEN: He laughed at first! He told me to go home and play with my building blocks. But I told him I traveled through time just to challenge him. I told him he was the best of his era, but I was the best of mine. I think he liked the confidence. He said, 'One game, kid. To eleven. You win, and I'll give you my jersey. I win, and you go back to the future and tell everyone you weren't ready.'

MS. SHANNON: [Leaning in, fascinated] To eleven? Holden, that’s a tall order. Michael Jordan didn’t like to lose, even in practice. How did the game go?

HOLDEN: It was intense. He was faster than the videos show. He went up five-zero before I could even find my rhythm. But then I remembered what you told me about physics—about the trajectory and the force. I started using the floor to my advantage. I did a crossover that actually made him stumble! I heard him mutter, 'Where did you learn that move?'

MS. SHANNON: You actually made him stumble? That’s incredible! What was the score at the end?

HOLDEN: It came down to the wire. Ten-ten. Next basket wins. He drove to the hoop for a dunk—his signature move—and I knew I couldn’t block him. So, I anticipated the lean. I took a charge, regained the ball, and stepped back behind the three-point line. I closed my eyes for a split second, thought about all those hours in the driveway, and released it. The ball didn’t even touch the rim. Swish. Eleven-ten. I beat him, Ms. Shannon. I actually beat him!

MS. SHANNON: [Beaming with pride] I knew you could do it! The first successful temporal transit and a legendary upset all in one day. You’ve made history, Holden. Literally. But we must check the timeline. Even small changes in the past can ripple forward. Let’s see if everything is as we left it.

[Ms. Shannon turns on the large television mounted on the lab wall. A news anchor is speaking over a highlight reel of basketball history.]

NEWS ANCHOR (VOICE OVER): ...and as we celebrate the anniversary of the 'Greatest Upset,' fans across the globe are lining up for the latest release of the world's most iconic sneaker. That’s right, the new 'Air Holdens' drop this Saturday!

HOLDEN: [Staring at the screen in shock] Wait... did he say 'Air Holdens'? Look at the logo on the screen! That’s not a silhouette of Michael Jordan dunking. That’s... that’s a silhouette of me in my oversized baseball cap!

MS. SHANNON: [Laughing as she looks down at Holden’s feet] Holden, look at your own shoes. They’ve changed! The logo on your heels... it’s you. It seems Michael Jordan was so impressed by your victory that he decided to brand the entire multi-billion dollar empire after the kid who beat him in 1992.

HOLDEN: [Touching the logo on his shoes] Air Holdens? I guess I didn't just beat him... I replaced him! Does this mean I'm famous now?

MS. SHANNON: It means you’re a legend, Holden. But don't let it go to your head. You still have to finish your science report by Monday. Even a time-traveling basketball star has homework.

HOLDEN: [Laughing] Fair enough, Ms. Shannon. But I think I’ll do my homework while wearing my brand new Air Holdens!
