The Giant Saguaro
The Sonoran Desert is very hot and dry. A giant saguaro cactus lives here.
It starts as a tiny black seed. The seed grows under a warm bush.
The bush keeps the baby cactus safe. It protects the baby from the hot sun.
The saguaro grows very slowly. It takes ten years to grow as tall as a thumb.
After fifty years, the cactus is tall. It grows beautiful white flowers in the spring.
Bats and bees visit the flowers. They drink the sweet nectar.
When the cactus is seventy years old, it grows arms. The arms reach up to the blue sky.
The saguaro is like a desert hotel. Birds build nests in its safe skin.
Woodpeckers make small round holes. Owls live in the holes too.
The saguaro can live for one hundred and fifty years. It stores water inside its green body to survive.
It is a giant helper in the dry desert. It keeps many animals safe and happy.
