The Gold in the Cracks

Maya sat at the corner worktable in the quiet studio, carefully adjusting the final glass tile of her mosaic. For three weeks, while her classmates rushed through their projects, Maya had dedicated every spare moment after school to this creation. Titled The River's Journey, the mosaic was a sweeping panel of blue, amber, and deep green glass tiles arranged to depict the winding waterway that ran through their town. The annual Oakridge Student Arts Showcase was scheduled for Friday afternoon, and Maya’s piece was widely expected to take top honors in the sculpture category. Her art teacher, Ms. Vance, had even arranged for a representative from the town council to attend.

Across the room, Julian was struggling. His own assignment—a papier-mâché relief map—lay collapsed on a newspaper-covered desk, soggy and lopsided. Julian had always felt a mild rivalry with Maya, but lately his frustration with his own work had been obvious. While Maya put the finishing touches on her mosaic's wooden frame, Ms. Vance stepped out of the studio to attend an urgent call in the main office. "Maya, could you help me move the display pedestals near the window?" Julian asked, his tone unusually hesitant. Maya nodded, wiping her hands on her apron, and walked toward the supply closet at the front of the room.
