Maya loved solving problems, especially when the solutions required spare nuts, bolts, and a bit of imagination. Her family's garage was not a place for parking cars; it was an inventor’s workshop. Metal shelves held jars of rusty screws, spools of copper wire, and discarded bicycle parts. Maya spent every Saturday morning at her workbench, sketching blueprints in a blue spiral notebook.
Her latest challenge came from her neighborhood's community garden. During the autumn harvest, gardeners had collected thousands of seeds from sunflowers, sweet peas, and tiny radishes. Unfortunately, a sudden gust of wind had tipped over the storage boxes, mixing all the seeds together in a single enormous bucket. Sorting them by hand would take weeks of tedious picking.
"Every difficult chore is just an invention waiting to happen," Maya declared to her younger brother, Julian, who was spinning a discarded roller skate wheel on the concrete floor.

If she connected the crank to an offset wooden dowel underneath the screen, turning the handle would bump the screen continuously, shaking the seeds like a gentle earthquake.
She spent the next hour recalibrating the angles and screwing the crank mechanism securely against the chute. When she finished, her fingers were smudged with graphite and grease, but her smile was wide.
"Take two," Maya said, handing Julian the scoop. "Start cranking!"
Julian turned the handle. The wooden dowel thumped steadily against the wire mesh, creating a rhythmic clatter. Maya poured a steady stream of seeds into the top funnel.
This time, the invention worked like magic. The vibration bounced the seeds down the ramp in an orderly parade. The fat sunflower seeds rolled gracefully into the top wooden bin. The round sweet pea seeds dropped through to the middle level, tumbling into their own basket. Below them, tiny dark radish seeds showered cleanly into the bottom tray. Within ten minutes, three tidy piles of sorted seeds sat on the workbench.
Julian let out a cheer, while Maya quickly grabbed her blue notebook to write down the adjustments they had made. She knew that real inventing was never about getting everything right on the first try; it was about paying attention to mistakes and finding clever ways to make things work.
