The blazing Oklahoma sun beat down on Leoâs neck as his family walked toward the visitor center at Alabaster Caverns State Park. Leo zipped up his lightweight jacket, feeling a bit silly wearing warm clothes on a hot summer afternoon. His younger sister, Maya, adjusted her bright yellow hard hat, which kept slipping down over her eyes. "Why do we need jackets if it's eighty degrees outside?" she asked, tugging on her chin strap.
"Just wait until we step underground," Dad replied with a mysterious smile. "The temperature inside the cavern stays around fifty degrees all year long, no matter how hot it gets up here."
A park ranger led the group down a long, winding flight of stairs into the entrance of the cave. Instantly, a blast of cool, crisp air washed over Leo. The bright sunlight faded, replaced by softly lit pathways that snaked through massive underground rooms. Giant walls of sparkling gypsum rock towered high above their heads. Leo looked up in awe at the smooth white surfaces of alabaster, a rare mineral that glittered like fresh snow whenever the lights caught its polished edges.
