Welcome to the Sandhills of Nebraska, one of the largest and most unique grass-covered sand dune regions in the Northern Hemisphere.
Thousands of years ago, powerful winds swept vast amounts of sand across central and western Nebraska, creating giant dunes. Over time, as the climate changed, specialized plants began to take root in the soil. Their long, deep roots tangled together, anchoring the loose sand in place and stopping the wind from blowing the hills away. Today, a thick carpet of mixed-grass prairie covers thousands of square miles. Without these sturdy native grasses, the Sandhills would transform back into a vast, shifting desert.
