Imagine standing on top of a rolling hill, looking out as far as the eye can see, and seeing nothing but grass swaying in the wind. This is not just an ordinary prairie. Deep beneath the green carpet lies ocean-like waves of ancient sand. Welcome to the Sandhills of Nebraska, one of the largest and most unique grass-covered sand dune regions in the Northern Hemisphere.
Thousands of years ago, powerful winds swept vast amounts of sand across central and western Nebraska, creating giant dunes. Over time, as the climate changed, specialized plants began to take root in the soil. Their long, deep roots tangled together, anchoring the loose sand in place and stopping the wind from blowing the hills away. Today, a thick carpet of mixed-grass prairie covers thousands of square miles. Without these sturdy native grasses, the Sandhills would transform back into a vast, shifting desert.
Water plays a surprising role in this dry-looking landscape. Beneath the sand sits the giant Ogallala Aquifer, a massive underground lake of freshwater. In many low-lying areas between the dunes, this groundwater rises all the way to the surface. This creates sparkling freshwater lakes, lush meadows, and marshy wetlands right in the middle of the grassy hills. These hidden water sources keep the roots of the prairie plants hydrated even during hot, dry summers.
Because of this special mix of grassy hills and wetland ponds, the Sandhills are home to incredible wildlife. Every spring, hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes gather along the nearby rivers to rest and feed on their long migration journey north. High on the grassy ridges, birds like the sharp-tailed grouse perform energetic dances during the breeding season. Beneath the soil, pocket gophers dig intricate tunnels, while mule deer and fleet-footed pronghorn graze across the open slopes.
The Nebraska Sandhills are a delicate balance of sand, water, and grass. Today, local ranchers and conservationists work together to manage the land carefully. By preventing overgrazing, they ensure the grass remains strong, protecting the sandy soil underneath and preserving this extraordinary home for native plants and animals.
